Sefrou and Bhalil are 2 towns situated in the Fez-Meknes region around 29 km from Fez. To explore these charming towns and distinctive villages, you will be driven up into the Middle Atlas Mountains’ highlands on our Excursion to Sefrou and Bhalil.
Sefrou, the biggest one out of the two, taking its name from the Berber tribe of Ahel Sefrou that lived in the area, is situated on the edge of the Atlas Mountain range with the Aggi river running through it. The town is famous for its annual cherry festival endorsed by UNESCO. You will explore the Jewish district, or Mellah, and navigate your way through small, winding pathways with their distinctive architectural styles to view the shops, Jewish cemetery, and synagogue. Sefrou was historically a Jewish community until the coming of Islam in the eighth century.
Bhalil on the other hand, is set on a hill in the southeast of Sefrou and it’s famous for its colorful homes and its unique cave built, some of the houses are open to tourists to visit and explore, it’s also known for olive oil production and the making of traditional Djellaba. You will be able to tour Bhalil’s famed olive oil-producing facilities as well as its traditional bread ovens. A panoramic view of the lush valley below and lovely hilltops is not to be missed from the village’s highest point.
